Weekend Buzz: June 26, 2025

Plenty to do around town in the next few days! This week, we have an authors' talk, local music, theater, visual arts, comedy, sunset cinema, gardening and even an International Chocolate Tour on Embassy Row for you. Did someone say, "Chocolate"?! Enjoy!
Take in an Authors' Talk!
Susie Dumond and Chip Pons
Mary Riley Styles Public Library, 120 N. Virginia Ave. Saturday, June 28, 2-4:00 p.m. Lower level Conference Room. Ages: Adults (18+).
MRSPL and Bards Alley will co-host local authors Susie Dumond and Chip Pons talking about their new contemporary romance books! A book signing will follow the talk. Copies of the authors' books will be available for sale at the event, or you can reserve copies by calling Bards Alley at 571-459-2653.
Susie Dumond's Bed and Breakup tells the story of Molly and Robin, two exes who reunite to fix up and sell the Hummingbird Inn, the bed-and-breakfast that destroyed their marriage – because some dreams, no matter how dusty or broken, deserve a second chance. Their love story is a bit of a fixer-upper!
Winging It With You is popular bookstagrammer Chip Pons's gay rom-com about two men who impulsively pose as a couple to compete in a reality show contest just minutes after meeting at an airport, and their run-in with the very real feelings that start to simmer between them.
About the Authors
Susie Dumond is a queer writer originally from Little Rock, Arkansas. She's the author of Queerly Beloved, Looking for a Sign, and Bed and Breakup, and she also talks about books as a senior contributor at Book Riot, and a bookseller at her local indie bookstore. Susie lives in Washington, D.C., with her spouse, Mickey, and her cat, Maple. When she's not writing or reading, you can find her baking cupcakes or belting karaoke at the nearest gay bar.
Chip Pons grew up in a small lake town in Northern Michigan before eventually traveling the world as a photojournalist in the U.S. Air Force, where he met and worked alongside his dream of a husband and better half. He’s spent his entire life swooning over the love stories filling up his shelves until one day, he was brave — or delusional — enough to write his own. He currently lives in the heart of Washington, D.C. and when he's not writing or chasing his pup, Margot, around, he can be found daydreaming of untold happily-ever-afters or on Bookstagram shouting about the books he loves. And snacking... like, all the time.

The Taming of the Shrew

Nova Nightsky Theatre, 225 E. Broad St.
By William Shakespeare. Adapted and Directed by Sarah Baczewski.
In this modern adaptation of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, the Minola family — Baptista, Katherine, and Bianca — are always in the spotlight, starring in their own hit show, Keeping Up with the Minolas. The strong-willed and outspoken Katherine, labeled a "shrew" by society, has become cynical and jaded by the limelight, especially as her younger sister Bianca’s charm and beauty earn her all the attention. However, as the ratings begin to fall, the fame-hungry Petruchio enters the scene, determined to "tame" Katherine in unconventional ways to win her hand, all while navigating the superficial world of reality television. Their battle of wits and wills reveals deeper themes of love, power, and identity, as they both wrestle with authenticity in a world obsessed with appearances. Meanwhile, Bianca, the seemingly perfect younger sister, hides her true manipulative nature, flipping the script on the “shrew” label. The story explores the dynamics of gender, marriage, and self-discovery, using humor and wit to critique the performative nature of reality TV and societal expectations.

The Untitled Unauthorized Hunter S. Thompson Musical
Signature Theater, Arlington, 4200 Campbell Ave. Through July 13.
Directed by Christopher Ashley. Choreography and Musical Staging by Jon Rua.
Let’s get wild in this exciting new musical about the infamous author from the mind of Joe Iconis (Be More Chill) and directed by Tony Award-winner Christopher Ashley (Come from Away).
A collision of politics, counterculture and rock and roll in human form, Hunter S. Thompson is impossible to pin down. Careening from the 1940s to 2005, Thompson invents Gonzo journalism, attempts to take down a corrupt president, and quests for equality for his fellow weirdos, outsiders and freaks. However, this anti-hero’s drug-fueled tornado leaves a trail of destruction as he grapples with his legacy in a world that has left him behind.
Funny and unique, as anarchic and irreverent as the writer himself, this explosive rock musical will spark a revolution for the rebel inside us all.
“Funny, freaky, informal, fiercely independent… an emotional passing of the torch to the future activists of the world, a celebration of and a primal call to the freaks and misfits.” – San Diego Magazine‘s review of the original sold out production at La Jolla Playhouse
Next Discussion Night: July 9 at 7:30 p.m. Go behind the scenes with an exclusive post-show discussion following select Tuesday and Wednesday performances.

Christina Lorena Weisner: Sea Marks: From the High Arctic to the Atlantic
Museum of Contemporary Art, Arlington, 3550 Wilson Blvd., Arlington. Through Sept. 7.
Chairmen’s Gallery
In Sea Marks, Christina Lorena Weisner presents sculpture, video, and mixed-media works that capture the interconnectedness of the earth’s oceanic environments. Focusing on the ocean currents and weather patterns that tie the planet together, her work points to the irreversible impact humans have on the health of the planet and all its interlocking systems.
The sculptural work in Sea Marks includes discarded plastic material that washed up on or near the beach in the Outer Banks, where Weisner lives, as well as plastic detritus she collected during her participation in the Arctic Circle Artist Residency. Markings on the plastic Weisner collected contain clues to its location of origin, demonstrating that plastic from around the world regularly makes its way to the Arctic via ocean currents.
The term ‘sea marks’ typically refers to objects and symbols meant to help with ocean navigation, including lighthouses. channel markers, orange flags, buoys, and beacons. Weisner’s work operates as a different type of sea mark. It points to material evidence of environmental catastrophe and warns her viewers about the dire circumstances we’ve created for the planet and, consequently, ourselves.
Christina Lorena Weisner
Christina Lorena Weisner is a sculptor and an Associate Professor in the Department of Fine Arts at the College of the Albemarle. Her work invites the viewer to consider the deep geological time of water, rocks, and the landscape as well as the more fleeting existence of living beings through objects, technology, scientific instruments, and the process of discovery.
Weisner has exhibited nationally and internationally, most recently at the Gregg Museum of Art and Design (Raleigh, NC), Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (Winston Salem, NC), and SteM Zwijgershoek / Mercatormuseum (Sint-Niklaas, Belgium). In 2013-2014, she was awarded a Fulbright Grant for Sculpture and Installation Art to Germany, where she worked on a series of site-specific sculptures based on the Ries Meteorite Impact Crater. Weisner received a BFA in Sculpture and BA in World Studies from Virginia Commonwealth University and a MFA in Sculpture and Ceramics from University of Texas at Austin.
Christina Lorena Weisner: Sea Marks: Explorations from the High Arctic to the Atlantic takes place as part of MoCA Arlington’s SOLOS 2025, part of the Museum’s long-running SOLOS exhibition program. Launched in 1988, SOLOS features solo exhibitions by artists based in the Mid-Atlantic region who are working at the forefront of contemporary art.

International Chocolate Tour of Embassy Row
Sunday, June 29, 12-2:00 p.m. Dupont Circle North Metro Station, 1908-1998 Q Street NW.
Take a guided international tour of Embassy Row and sample chocolate from throughout the globe.
Explore one of the most culturally fascinating areas of Washington, D.C. – “Embassy Row.” In a single afternoon, you’ll stand at the borders of Ireland, Romania, Turkey, Vietnam, Indonesia, and more! We'll also hear some of the more romantic stories of this famous Avenue.
Someone said, decades ago, that in order to thrive as part of the Embassy Row scene, three things were needed: “Protocol, Alcohol, and Geritol…” Fast forward fifty years as we take a walk along one of Washington’s most famous grand boulevards – Massachusetts Avenue’s Embassy Row. You'll see some of the city’s grandest homes, learn about the foreign governments that now call them home, as well as the scandals and stories of the residents who used to own them. Ever wonder if the curse of the Hope Diamond is true? Come join us and find out!
In addition, we’ll sample chocolate from several different countries! We'll each savor multiple pieces of chocolate or candy most popular in nations from around the world.
Join our expert guide for this incredible inside look into Embassy Row.
(Note: This is an outdoor tour. While we may try to make arrangements to visit inside some diplomatic residences, this is not promised. Expect most – if not all – of the tour to be an outside walking tour).
Tickets: $45.85.
