Shopping Passport Offers Residents Chances to Win Prizes, Discover Unique Shops and Restaurants, and Support Local Businesses

November 30 is Small Business Saturday 2024, a day to celebrate and support small, local businesses!

Our premier local bookstore, One More Page, at 2200 N. Westmoreland St., Arlington – just a block outside the City of Falls Church – is "looking forward to celebrating" this national shopping day designed as an alternative to the Big Box store shopping day spectacle of Black Friday.

The store will be showcasing "tables full of free books in front of the store, an in-store Scavenger Hunt, snacks and, of course, the Arlington/Falls Church Shopping Passport!"

"This is an important day for our business every year, and we love finding ways to make it special for our customers," One More Page said in a press release.

This year, over 20 Falls Church and Arlington businesses will participate in the Small Business Weekend Passport program "designed to help area shoppers discover unique shops and restaurants, keep their shopping dollars local and be eligible to win prizes."

"With so many wonderful businesses participating this year, the Passport Program will run for two days – Saturday, Nov. 30 AND Sunday, Dec. 1 – to give folks more time to enjoy these local gems," the store said.

What the Shopping Passport Brings

Led by One More Page Books, the Passport enables shoppers who are looking to #shoplocal and #shopsmall easily discover small businesses near them.

The passport includes a mix of shopping and food establishments, so shoppers can take a break from the bustle of shopping to enjoy a rejuvenating cup of coffee, a snack, some cider or a meal.

“We love hearing from customers that a number of them have made the Passport a part of their annual holiday traditions. This year, we’re giving them two days since we added more shops and restaurants to the list. We enjoy shopping and working with these businesses and hope our customers will as well!,” said One More Page Books owner, Eileen McGervey.

Customers can pick up the Passport at any of the 22 participating businesses (see below for list). To be eligible to win one of three Grand Prize Baskets of goods and gift certificates, customers need to collect “stamps” from at least eight of the participating businesses on Small Business Weekend. Once completed, the Passports can be dropped off at One More Page Books or at the last store visited that weekend.

Winners of the baskets will be randomly drawn from all completed Passports on Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 3:00 p.m. at One More Page Books. The community is invited to attend the drawing.

In 2011, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed a resolution in support of Small Business Saturday, and by 2012, officials in all 50 states began to participate – and they have every year since. The day has grown into an annual holiday shopping tradition. Research shows that 68 percent of dollars spent at local stores remains in the local economy.
