With New ‘Amazon Fresh,’ Falls Church Grocery Options Continue to Soar
Might we soon see a grocery store on every corner in Falls Church?
In July, we reported a major new grocery outlet, The Fresh Market, will be opening in the West Falls Development in the City of Falls Church at the corner of Haycock Rd. and Broad Street by mid-2026 – essentially across the street from the Birch & Broad Giant.
A “specialty fresh food retailer” from Greensboro, N.C., The Fresh Market is “known for its European boutique market feel, upscale international fare, curated goods, and competitively priced meal packages.” The store is slated to “include 29,000 sq.-ft. of retail grocery space to serve the ‘lifestyle community’ of the City’s largest-ever development project.”
Another 3 New Groceries on the Way
By August, news of three new Falls Church grocery stores hit the stands.
“Falls Church may be known as the Little City but soon there will be nothing diminutive about its grocery options,” ArlNow reporter Katie Taranto wrote.
“Three different grocery chains are set to join Falls Church’s existing selection of supermarkets in the coming months and years,” Taranto reported. “Already home to a Giant, a Harris Teeter and an Aldi, the city is expected to add a new Whole Foods and Grocery Outlet within the next year or so, according to Economic Development Division Chief Becky Witsman.” In addition to the Fresh Market at West Falls, a new Whole Foods will soon be opening at Broad & Washington.
“Then, about halfway through 2025 or later, a Grocery Outlet is expected to open at 500 S. Washington Street, formerly occupied by Target. The store, billed as “the nation’s largest extreme-value retailer,” is known for its selection of heavily discounted groceries,” Taranto reported.
Idylwood Whole Foods to Move
In other news on the ever-shifting grocery retail news front, the Whole Foods at 7511 Leesburg Pike, Idylwood Plaza, in Falls Church, has announced it will be re-locating "soon" to Falls Church City, where it will anchor the new Broad and Washington development at 103 E. Broad Street, according to Fairfax Now's Angela Woolsey.
New Amazon Fresh Opens in Falls Church
Now comes news that a brand-spanking new 40,000 sq.-ft. Amazon Fresh – the 10th such grocery outlet in the D.C. Metro region – opened just this morning at 7:45 a.m. at 5811 Crossroads Center Way, Falls Church. The store will be open seven days-a-week, from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
“This new, affordable grocery store in the community offers a wide selection of quality groceries and a convenient shopping experience,” Amazon said in a press release. “We’re also proud to support the community by creating dozens of jobs in Virginia, and by donating surplus food from the Amazon Fresh store to the Capital Area Food Bank.”
Regional Manager of Amazon Fresh, Doug Chamberlain, expressed his enthusiasm for the opening in Falls Church. “We’re thrilled to open our newest Amazon Fresh grocery store right here in the heart of Bailey’s Crossroads,” he said. “This opening invites customers in Falls Church to experience grocery shopping with Amazon Fresh, both in-store and online. We’re excited for customers to see our wide selection of national brands, high-quality produce, and curated array of their favorite local items and fresh-prepared meals. Our team is proud to continue expanding in Northern Virginia and build new relationships with our customers and important local organizations in the area like Capital Area Food Bank.”
Of course, Amazon Prime members can receive special discounts at Amazon Fresh. “Prime members can save on even more grocery items from Amazon Fresh on everything from top national brands to Amazon’s own private-label products. Amazon Fresh recently announced it expanded its Prime savings program by offering even more great savings on over 3,000 grocery items for Prime members, including up to 50 percent off on eight-to-15 grocery favorites that rotate each week, including fresh produce, protein, and pantry staples.”
“What sets Amazon Fresh apart is its ability to merge the convenience of online grocery shopping with an elevated in-store experience,” the press release said. “Customers can take advantage of fast grocery delivery and pickup options, while also enjoying ways to make grocery shopping in store more convenient, like the Amazon Dash Cart and Amazon One.”
The Amazon Fresh store in Falls Church “features the company’s latest brick-and-mortar design unveiled last year in Chicago and Southern California,” the press release said. “Customers can expect to find a wide selection of national brands, high-quality produce and protein, as well as Amazon’s private-label brands like Aplenty, Amazon Fresh, Amazon Saver, and 365 by Whole Foods Market – all at great low prices.”
The store boasts of its “wide assortment of national brands and high-quality produce, meat, and seafood, as well as a range of delicious prepared foods made fresh in store every day — with great deals on fresh produce, seafood, cereal, and more,” offering “destinations for everything you need to entertain, including a dedicated department offering a wide selection of crackers, cheeses, and charcuterie from local and national brands and a wide selection of international flavors with condiments and sauces from around the world. Customers will also find grab & go sandwiches, salads, wraps, and snack boxes to pick up for busy weekends filled with family activities or stop in after work to grab take-and-bake pizzas, ready-to-heat burritos, and ready-made meals to simplify dinner plans.”
Amazon Fresh also touts its local offerings, including “more than 35 regional brands and favorites,” such as “Tessemae's condiments, Smithfield, and True Made Foods.”
